Jamie Carragher on why Chelsea shouldn’t sack Mourinho

Former Liverpool captain and now Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher has been speaking about Jose Mourinho’s future at Chelsea.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher reveals, if he was in charge at Chelsea, he would not be preparing to sack Mourinho, regardless of the result against Liverpool this weekend.

Reports have circulated throughout the last week that the Stoke game that Mourinho lost during the week and the huge clash with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side could decide his fate. Despite losing five out of their opening 10 games, Carragher insists he is “too good” to simply get rid of at Chelsea.

He said:

People are talking about him getting the sack if he loses that game [against Liverpool]. I wouldn’t sack him if I was Chelsea. I think he’s a fantastic manager, his record shows that.

The Blues currently sit 15th in the Premier League table, 11 points off the joint front runners, Manchester City and Arsenal. Chelsea are three points off this weekend’s opponents, Liverpool.

Carragher admits it may not be his on the field record that gets Mourinho the boot:

But it’s not just on the pitch, it’s off the pitch. If he was to lose his job, I think it would be more for off-the-pitch incidents rather than just results. If Chelsea were fifth or sixth in the league we’d still be criticising. But to get rid of a manager who has just won the championship, three or four months into a new season, even though they’ve had a terrible start, I wouldn’t be looking to get rid of Jose Mourinho.

The Sky Sports pundit adds that Chelsea would struggle to find a suitable replacement for Mourinho if they sack him:

He’s too good, there’s probably only two or three managers in world football at his level, and whoever Chelsea brought in would maybe be a step below.
