Mikel blames Clattenburg for Saturday’s defeat

John Obi Mikel has spoken following the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday and has pointed the finger towards Mark Clattenburg, as part of the reason for the defeat.

Speaking the club’s official website, Mikel admits the referee played a big role in the result against Jurgen Klopp’s side. The midfielder felt a number of key decisions went against Chelsea, therefore changing the course of the match.

We got the goal and if we went into the break 1-0 up it would have been much easier but the referee played two minutes and 30 seconds [stoppage time] and if we’d played the exact minutes we would have gone in at 1-0.

Then the referee gave me a yellow card for my first foul and just after that Lucas committed a foul – for me and for everyone else it should have been a [second] yellow card.

This is not the first time the pair have clashed, Mikel accused Clattenburg of racially abusing him back in 2013 following a defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The defeat at home to Liverpool leaves the club placed 15th in the Premier League with just 11 points after the same amount of games. The club are just four points off the relegation zone. Next up for Chelsea in the Premier League is a tough trip to Stoke, where they were knocked out of the Capital One Cup recently.
