According to the Evening Standard, an investigation has revealed that Premier League champions Chelsea have been at the top of BBC programme Match of the Day’s running order the most, because of their struggles this season.
Since the beginning of the domestic campaign, Jose Mourinho’s side have really struggled in form and subsequently find themselves sitting in 16th position in the Premier League table, three points above the relegation zone.
As well as having a poor season on the pitch, the Blues and Mourinho have made headlines for situations off the field too. In the early stages of the season, the situation with doctor Eva Carneiro happened, which was widely spoken about. Following two FA charges for misconduct down the line, Portuguese boss Mourinho had to admit that he is in the worst form of his career.
Mark Cole, who is the BBC’s head of football, has stated that because of the form of the champions along with their ‘soap opera’ storylines involving the club and their manager, has meant that the broadcaster has opted to put the Blues on the show first five times this season already.
When the champions are losing, it is always a story. Throw in a bit of Jose Mourinho and it means they are quite often in the mix around the top of the running order.
When Cole was asked whether or not Mourinho’s antics in the majority of the games this season has anything to do with the decision, he responded:
Normally we would put a couple of 20-second clips in there, but we decided to run it in full because it was a really interesting exchange and we thought that was really insightful for the audience to see Mourinho’s state of mind.
It dominates so many of the back pages and it is something there is real interest in what is going to happen next in the soap opera that is Jose Mourinho?
