Lukaku: I am not the new Drogba

Romelu Lukaku has admitted that he still talks to Didier Drogba but believes he is not ‘the new Drogba’, according to Teamtalk.

The Belgian international has 14 goals so far this season after Jose Mourinho allowed the highly touted striker leave Stamford Bridge in 2014, despite two successful loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Everton.

The Belgian has been likened by many to his idol and Chelsea legend Drogba, but Lukaku has always be keen to make his own name.

I respect Didier a lot, but I think there are still differences in our style of play. I want to play at a high level and help my team-mates out and hopefully at the end of my career I can say I did my best to create a name for myself.

I still speak to Drogba. He gives me tips all the time. We have had a really special relationship since day one. hen I arrived at Chelsea they put me next to him in the dressing room so that is when it started and I saw what a top professional he was – not just him but John Terry, Frank Lampard, Nicolas Anelka, Fernando Torres. As an 18-year-old, I was watching what they were doing and soaking it up and it was a good year of preparation.

Lukaku recently scored his 50th goal for Everton in just 100 appearances and at just 22 years old, the Belgian has a bright future ahead of him but he believes he learnt a lot from his time at Chelsea.

Asked what he had learned most from the Ivorian forward, Lukaku said:

The determination to win. He was a leader. When the team needed him the most he always delivered so that is what I aim for and hopefully one day I can say I was that type of player.

As Chelsea’s disastrous season continues to spiral out of control and the issues between Diego Costa and Jose Mourinho, many Chelsea fans will be wondering what could have been with Lukaku.

matchday.
