Former Chelsea coach Ray Wilkins believes that Jose Mourinho is only still Chelsea boss due to his past successes at Stamford Bridge, but that may not be the case much longer if the Blues lose to Porto on Wednesday.
In an interview with beIN Sports, Wilkins said he believes that a loss against Jose’s former club could be the last straw in what has been a season of turmoil so far.
Chelsea currently sit top of Group G on 10 points, level with Porto, but defeat to the Portuguese side could mean that Chelsea fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League providing Dynamo Kiev also beat Maccabi Tel Aviv, with the Israeli side having already lost every game so far.
Wilkins said:
Any other manager would have gone. Mourinho is still there, purely and simply, for what he has done in the past.
He also cited a big game against surprise table-toppers Leicester as a reason for change, as Chelsea can’t afford to lose any more ground in the hunt for European football next season.
Wilkins also said that he feels a lack of leadership and presence in the dressing room means that players are afraid to tell each other a few home truths.
I always feel when John Terry doesn’t play they don’t look like they have a leader. In the dressing room, sometimes they need to have a pop at each other and they’re not doing it.
Only time will tell if it will be one of Mourinho’s former clubs that are to condemn him to the sack.
