Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic has voiced his confusion at the Blues’ inability to replicate their European form in the Premier League.
The Champions’ fortunes appeared to be changing last week when they defeated Porto to top their Champions League group and progress to the last 16. However, this was followed up on Monday by an awful 2-1 defeat at the hands of high-flying Leicester and the Serb expressed his confusion at the occurrences according to the Daily Star.
I cannot explain why consistency has been so difficult to achieve. I don’t know what happened to us against Leicester. In the game against Porto, a very good team, we played very well, we scored two goals and created chances, but we were like another team on the pitch against Leicester. It is one more game that was not good for us. We are sad because of the defeat but we have to keep going, to try to win some games and to recover from this situation which is not easy for us. We have to try to be better than we were.
Chelsea now sit just a point outside the relegation zone with a dismal 15 points from 16 games and the BBC today reported that the club have held talks with manager Jose Mourinho over his future at Stamford Bridge.
The Portuguese will be hoping that the club can repeat their European success of just over three years ago and win Europe’s premier competition to aid his chances of staying in the job. And, while Matic accepts that this will be a tall order after being drawn against PSG in the next round, the midfielder remained hopeful of progressing through the tournament.
It’s going to be a great experience for us, two great games, very hard I have to say, but in these kinds of games you don’t have favourites – anyone can go through. I am sure that it’s going to be interesting and I hope we can do something.
Chelsea face Sunderland this weekend, one of only four teams who sit below them in the league and will be optimistic of picking up a valuable three points. If, however, Mourinho’s men drop yet more points, the manager’s days must surely be numbered.
