Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has recently revealed to the Guardian that Chelsea is a happier place under new manager Guus Hiddink than it was under former manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese manager was relieved of his duties just before Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Sunderland and was swiftly replaced by the experienced Dutchman, Hiddink.
Mikel was unable to really identify what has gone wrong for the first half of Chelsea’s season, discussing Mourinho’s efforts and the players’ performances as a unit not being quite enough to recreate their success last season.
I’ve been as confused as everyone else. It’s difficult when you’re not playing, as you don’t really know what the problems are. I wasn’t playing that much under Mourinho so couldn’t put my finger on what was going wrong. It was a collective thing – the players and the manager were not performing.
Despite Chelsea not getting back to winning ways quickly under Hiddink, the Nigerian midfielder remains optimistic over the club’s future under their new manager and believes that they are taking the right steps forward.

He (Hiddink) hasn’t changed much yet but he was here before and he knows the place and all the staff. The players are different – only me and John Terry were here before – but he knows what to do. We’re down there in the table for a reason so he can’t come in and perform miracles but we want to get out of there and climb the table. We’ve had three games now without losing so are making the right steps.
Hiddink and Mikel will be hoping to start the new year off with an important victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
