Ex-Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has revealed to FourFourTwo, that he expects his former club to undergo a major summer overhaul after having a hugely underwhelming season so far.
It has been well documented that Chelsea have had a torrid first half to the Premier League this season, parting company with Jose Mourinho and replacing him with interim boss Guus Hiddink.
However, despite the arrival of the experienced Dutchman, the Blues still find themselves in a majorly disappointing 14th place and still some way off the top four.
Lampard said:
From seeing some of the games I saw when I was back in England over the Christmas period, I think they need a new injection around the team. It’s strange because a year ago, you’re thinking, ‘They’ve got a great squad and if they add to it they can really go.’
There is no doubt cast over the talents and capabilities of the players within Chelsea’s squad, that won the title last year, however, this season it seems as though under-performing has been the downfall.
Last year’s PFA player of the season Eden Hazard has been possibly the most disappointing in the Chelsea side this season, failing to impose himself on their campaign at all and being an accurate representation as to why fresh faces are needed at Stamford Bridge to revive their form and potentially spark an improvement in the squad’s performances.
The midfielder went on to say:
Now you’re thinking, ‘They need to revamp, to change some players.’ I think that will happen in the summer. I think there will be three or four or five players and positions in the team that change around.
However, despite Chelsea’s disappointing campaign so far, Lampard has no doubt that his former club will bounce back.
They’re a huge club and there’s obviously been issues there. You see that when they fire the manager who won the league six months before. I know a lot of people at the club. They will come back.
Chelsea’s next game is away to league leaders, Arsenal.
