Hughes not thinking about Chelsea job

Amid reports of a potential move to Chelsea in the summer, Stoke boss Mark Hughes has shrugged off any speculation linking him with taking over at Stamford Bridge for next season, according to the Stoke Sentinel.

It has been a turbulent few months at the helm for Chelsea, with the dismissal of Jose Mourinho being followed closely by interim manager Guus Hiddink, who is now in charge of the Blues for his second spell in charge until the end of the season.

There is no doubt that Hiddink will be relieved of his duties also at the end of the season, so it comes as no surprise to see Chelsea identifying potential suitors to the job months beforehand, but it looks as though Hughes is not one in the running anymore.

There is always speculation. I don’t think I was doing particularly well last weekend (when Stoke lost 3-0 at Leicester), I did better in the week. It’s the ups and downs of being a manager I suppose.

There’s speculation about certain roles in Premier League at the moment and at some point if you have a decent spell you’ll get mentioned in dispatches. It’s no more or less than that. I think they’re trying to cover all their bases and this week I got a mention. It is what it is

Hughes’ tenure at Stoke has been a highly enjoyable one for the Welshman, changing the stereotypical ‘boring’ style of play to an exciting, free-flowing attacking set-up; a good representation of his credentials as a manager.

It’s just speculation. It’s nice to be mentioned I suppose because it reflects well maybe on me but more so on the team and the players – and that’s how it should be. We’re having a decent season.

Chelsea have also been linked with managerial moves for Massimiliano Allegri, currently in charge of Juventus, as well as Southampton boss Ronald Koeman.
