Lampard: Chelsea must keep John Terry

Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes that his former side should offer captain John Terry a new contract to keep him at Stamford Bridge beyond the end of the current season.

As it stands, the 35-year-old will leave the club at the end of the campaign although he’s made it known that he’d love to stay.

While it can be argued that the club are right to look to move on from their legendary captain as he comes to the end of his career, it could make sense to keep him around, not only for his on-field ability but also because he could help the new manager with his leadership and knowledge of the Premier League.

Speaking to Goal.com, Lampard said that if the decision was his, he’d offer Terry a new deal:

He said:

I think, for me, he’s been probably the best defender at Chelsea again this year. I think he’s a leader, he has a huge presence with the club. For me, I would [give him another contract], but it’s a decision for the club to make. I know John wants to stay. I think he’s a help for the young players at the club, I think he’s a link with the fans at the club, but the decision will be made by the owners. Same as what happened with me, eventually your time comes. I’m not sure now is his time. I’ve seen him perform this year, and I think he’s done very well.

As it stands, the home tie against Leicester City in May will be Terry’s last for Chelsea.
