Roberto Di Matteo is targeting Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford for Aston Villa’s first season in the Championship, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
The Chelsea striker spent last season out on loan, firstly at Crystal Palace and then at Norwich City.
The 22-year-old didn’t really succeed at either club and it’s unlikely that any Premier League side will want to take him, but Villa apparently do.
Whilst his Premier League record is pretty poor, Bamford has fond memories in the Championship after successful loan spells with both Derby County and Middlesborough.
In a combined 59 appearances for both sides, he scored 25 goals in the second tier of English football and if he could score at a similar ration for Villa next season, he’d be a huge asset.

The chances of Bamford getting game time at Chelsea look extremely bleak and after bouncing around on loan after loan, it would probably be best for the player if he can make a permanent switch and look to kick-start his career.
