Reported Chelsea target suffers major injury

Roma have only just purchased defender Antonio Rudiger from Stuttgart for €9million after meeting the release clause they had negotiated as part of the loan deal that saw him temporarily join the Italian side.

There had been reports which suggested that Roma had only met the release fee in order to sell him to Chelsea for a major profit, but that now looks very unlikely to happen.

The defender, as reported by German journalist Raphael Honigstein, has suffered a major knee injury whilst training ahead of Euro 2016.

The timing of the injury is cruel for the defender who would have been hopeful of starting for the reigning World Champions as they look to copy the Spain side of recent years by holding the World Cup and European Championship at the same time.

Furthermore, the injury will prevent Rudiger from making a switch to Chelsea, which if reports are to believed, was a major possibility.
