Chelsea have apparently joined fellow Premier League side Everton in expressing an interest to sign midfielder Axel Witsel from Zenit St Petersburg, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
Chelsea are already trying to sign Witsel’s international teammate Radja Nainggolan but it appears that Roma are unwilling to sell, so the Blues have identified Witsel as another target. However, there is no indication of whether the interest in Zenit is as an alternative or as an addition to Nainggolan.
Since Ronald Koeman’s arrival at Goodison Park, the Toffees have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old as the Dutchman has clearly identified Everton’s midfield as an area that requires a serious upgrade.
As of now, there have not been any solid bids made to Zenit for Witsel and any movement is unlikely whilst he is still away with Belgium, but when he returns after the Euros, the Russian club are likely to be receiving offers.
