Book review | Carlo Ancelotti: Quiet Leadership

Carlo Ancelotti is a widely respected man among not only European football but world football. Known as one of the best managers of the last two decades, he has had spells in England, France Spain and now Germany, in his latest adventure with Bayern Munich, where he replaced Pep Guardiola.

At Chelsea, he enjoyed a very successful period, albeit a short one. During his time at Stamford Bridge he brought a calm presence to the club, but success and a swagger at the same time. That same Italian swagger that Chelsea fans are now witnessing with their current head coach, Antonio Conte.

Ancelotti didn’t leave Chelsea on the greatest of terms and has been looked upon by Chelsea fans as ‘one that got away’. He clinched the league title at Stamford Bridge with some of the best, attacking and free-flowing football the club has seen, alongside an FA Cup victory after beating Everton at Wembley.

So you can imagine our delight when he released his book ‘Quiet Leadership’, we were quite excited to get the chance to read it.

The book takes you through the Italian’s journey as a football manager, his relationship with club owners, including Roman Abramovich and how his time at Chelsea differed to that of his time at Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

The book has a very interesting format, taking you through his career alongside exclusive interviews from players that he has worked with throughout his time as a manager, including one from Chelsea captain John Terry.

Terry explains what the Italian was like on and off the pitch, on the training ground and in the dressing room, recalling a conversation he had with the former Chelsea boss, where he reassured him that he was up there with the best defenders, comparing him to Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta.

It’ll prove to be an interesting read for any Chelsea fan, but also for any football fan who has any admiration for one of the most successful managers and because of that, we’d highly recommend it.
