Chelsea advanced to the fourth round of the EFL Cup at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday evening after a thrilling 4-2 win over Premier League champions Leicester City.
The Foxes got off to an electric start, dominating play and scoring in the 17th and 24th minutes via Shinji Okazaki. Both goals were as a result of senseless defending and shots that couldn’t be cleared off the line in time.
The Blues drew one back just before halftime when Gary Cahill scored with a header in stoppage time.
Antonio Conte’s men carried that momentum into the second half, equalising via a Cesar Azpilicueta wonder strike in the 49th minute. After an attempted shot was blocked, the ball was headed out of the box only to find Azpilicueta’s boot on a volley from 20 metres out.
With neither team able to find a breakthrough and extra time looming, Leicester’s Marcin Wasilewski was given a red card for a forearm to the face of Diego Costa. The Foxes, down to 10 men, were forced to pack the box and defend for the next half hour.
Cesc Fabregas scored twice within the first four minutes of extra time, giving Chelsea the victory.
