Following Chelsea’s recent struggles, you would be forgiven for thinking that Chelsea could do with some reinforcements to bolster their squad. As a result, I have compiled a list of former players who would really help the Blues in their current predicament.
Jose Mourinho has been particularly guilty of letting talented individuals leave the club – either because they don’t fit his system, or as a result of his aversion to utilising youth players. Many of these players have since gone on to emerge as some of the brightest talents in Europe after moving on from Chelsea.
There have also been several players returning to Chelsea in recent seasons – following their unprecedented development at other clubs. Nemanja Matic, for example, was originally bought for just £1.5million by Chelsea, but after struggling to get into the side he moved to Benfica as a makeweight for David Luiz – who has also recently returned to Stamford Bridge.
At Benfica Matic became one of Europe’s most coveted midfielders – and so Mourinho decided to bring the Serb back to Stamford Bridge for almost 20 times the amount the club had originally paid.
