Chelsea demolished Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side 4-0 – upon his return to Stamford Bridge.
The game was also filled with loving tributes to the late, great Matthew Harding – who passed away 20 years ago this weekend.
The game was barely 30 seconds old when Chelsea took the lead as Pedro latched onto a hopeful pass from Marcos Alonso, before rounding David De Gea and scoring into an empty net.
Despite the early goal, Manchester United dominated possession as they looked to get back into the game. But having failed to create any clear-cut opportunities, United paid the price as Gary Cahill escaped his marker – Chris Smalling, who was also at fault for the first goal, before lashing the ball home. At this point, Stamford Bridge was rocking and Chelsea were in complete control.
In the second half, Mourinho brought on former Chelsea favourite Juan Mata to try and half the deficit but his substitution had the opposite effect as Mata’s poor defending allowed Eden Hazard to steal into the box and curl the ball past a helpless De Gea. The most unlikeliest of scorers rounded off a superb Chelsea performance when N’Golo Kante fainted past Smalling before placing the ball into the corner.
