David Luiz believes Chelsea’s return to form in October has put the Blues in contention to win the Premier League title at the end of the season, the Daily Mail reports.
Despite manager Antonio Conte urging his players and the media to assess Chelsea’s title chances after Christmas, Luiz believes the Blues are definite title contenders already if they stay focused.
We are title challengers. It will be like this until the end. It is still just the beginning, the end is more important than the beginning. We need to keep our feet on the floor. We try our best every match and try to improve our level. We know the Premier League isn’t easy.
Conte’s shift to a 3-4-3 formation at the beginning of October saw his side move to within one point of joint leaders Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal with four consecutive league victories last month.
Chelsea were the only team from Europe’s top five leagues to keep a clean sheet in every league game in October, and Luiz emphasised the importance of keeping that run going.
Mr Conte works hard with us and tried to give a lot of information for us to prepare the plans for the games in the best way. It is important to continue this way. If you sleep for one minute you start to lose and then you lose one, two, three matches. We have to be awake all the time.
The Blues bounced back from what was a September to forget after consecutive defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal respectively, saw the Blues end the month with just one point from a possible nine following a 2-2 draw with strugglers Swansea at the beginning of the month.
Chelsea saw off Hull, Leicester, Manchester United and Southampton in October, however, picking up maximum points.
Diego Costa ended the month as the top scorer in the league so far with eight goals, while Eden Hazard picked up the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month award for October.
