Alonso hails victory over Everton

Marcos Alonso was full of praise for himself and his teammates following Chelsea’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Everton on Saturday evening, the club’s official website reported.

The Spaniard opened his goalscoring account for the club with a cool finish, completing a quick fire double as Chelsea scored two goals in the space of a minute, after Eden Hazard’s 19th minute opener.

Diego Costa grabbed a third prior to half-time, before Hazard and Pedro rounded things off in a display which Alonso believes was full of positives.

When asked how he felt about his goal and the performance, the wing-back replied:

[I’m] Very happy. I hope more of that will be coming in the next few matches. We are playing great games – not just scoring goals, but also not conceding. This is the way we have to continue.

The victory over Everton was the Toffees’ heaviest league defeat in seven years, and was Chelsea’ fifth consecutive league victory under Antonio Conte’s revolutionary 3-4-3 formation.

The Blues have kept a clean sheet in their last five victories, and Alonso believes the players have taken to the new formation very well.

Overall we have to keep working as we are doing now because the team is playing very well and this is the way we have to follow.

We have settled well in this system. We are all defending well, all the players are running and helping each other and I think that is the main thing.

He continued:

Even if we play four at the back, three at the back, if we all run like this and we all put this passion into the game, I think it’s going to be tough to beat.

Chelsea went to the top of the Premier League table following Saturday evening’s win, albeit temporarily due to Liverpool’s 6-1 win over Watford on Sunday.

And following Conte’s message to the players and media last week that Chelsea’s title credentials should be assessed after Christmas, Alonso also believes there is a long way to go in the race for the title.

It’s good to be at the top but the important thing is to be there at the end of the season so now we will have to fight to stay up there.
