Marko van Ginkel set for January loan move

Chelsea will allow Marko van Ginkel to leave on another loan spell in January after successfully recovering from a knee injury, according to Goal.

The 23-year-old has been limited to just four appearances for Chelsea since joining the club from Vitesse Arnhem in an £8m deal back in the summer of 2013.

Just two months into his Chelsea career, van Ginkel tore his right ACL in a League Cup clash against Swindon and didn’t feature again that season despite returning from injury in March and spending the rest of the campaign with the U21 squad.

AC Milan were eager to help van Ginkel get his career back on track and brought him in on loan the following season but it was an up and down term for the Dutchman making just 18 appearances for Milan in another injury-hit campaign.

Last summer saw Premier League side Stoke take a flyer on the talented midfielder and despite being a regular in the side for the first-half of the season, making 21 appearances, they cut his loan spell short and he returned to Holland with PSV for the second-half of the 2015/16 season.

It was with PSV where he rediscovered his top form, scoring eight goals in 13 league appearances as they won the Eredivisie title. PSV were eager to bring van Ginkel back in the summer but a persistent knee issue ruled out a move.

Chelsea U23 coach Adi Viveash stated that the midfielder has an injection in his knee to counteract the pains and he’s now working with the U23s to build his fitness.

“Marco had an injection in the knee,” Viveash told a press conference at Stamford Bridge. “He trained in pre-season with the loan players and he has been with us for a couple of weeks now and he is a bit further ahead.”

When van Ginkel returns to full fitness, he will be sent out on loan again, Viveash says, to play some regular first-team football.

“He just needs match fitness as he hasn’t had an injury, obviously for Marco, he will be getting ready for January and then I imagine he will be looking to play senior football as he has done previously.

“He will be looking [for a loan move] and that is what he did. He would be out on loan now, if he hadn’t have had to have the injection. Now we are just helping him build up his fitness levels and his match minutes and he will certainly benefit from that game and be ready for January.”

Van Ginkel played his first 90 minutes of the season in the Checkatrade Trophy with the Chelsea U23s in midweek along with Kurt Zouma who was also making his return to action following a similar knee injury that van Ginkel suffered in 2013.
