Antonio Conte is relatively happy with his squad but is still hoping to sign new players if the ‘right’ ones are available, according to Sky Sports.
The departures of John Obi Mikel on Friday to the Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin TEDA, who followed the footsteps of Oscar who left for Shanghai SIPG in a £60 million deal. Dutch international Marco van Ginkel also left the club on loan to PSV Eindhoven, means less options for Conte in midfield but he confirmed the club are targeting new players.
Conte explained:
In January it is always difficult to buy great players because the other teams don’t want to sell. To buy only to buy, I don’t like. Not closer, but we have some ideas about this. We are working around these ideas.
One area that Conte isn’t worried about is the central defence.
I don’t think we need another central defender, no.
That certainly makes sense judging by the solid performances of their defence trio, Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill.
John Terry is also available after an injury-disrupted season, while French defender Kurt Zouma has recovered from long-term knee injury and made his return to the first-team in the FA Cup against Peterborough on Sunday.
Several names like Federico Bernardeschi, Franck Kessie, Arturo Vidal and Tiemoue Bakayako are reportedly on Chelsea’s radar.
