Nathan Ake has held his first interview with Chelsea TV since returning to the club and revealed that head coach Antonio Conte has brought him back to the club as he wants to see him compete and play alongside preferred defensive trio Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta, as reported by the Express.
Dutchman Ake was recalled from his impressive loan spell at Bournemouth, can also act as cover for Marcos Alonso at left wing-back, following reports over the Spaniard’s fitness since his summer arrival.
Ake has proved effective in both attack and defence, scoring three goals, while his ability to block and intercept the ball has seen Bournemouth keep six Premier League clean sheets already this season – the fifth-best total in the league.
A loan spell at Watford last season produced similar results – as Ake started 20 games in the Hornets first season back in the top-flight.
He’s happy for me to come back, he said he’s watched my games and that I did well in those games. He wants to see me here, how I’ll do in this team and, yes, to learn different positions.
Which suggests that Conte wants Ake to learn to play at both wing-back and in his preferred position at centre-back, whilst the 21-year-old is also able to play in defensive midfield.
Ake continued by saying:
I’m looking forward to training and learning a lot under this coach.
