Arsenal are lucky to be so close to Chelsea in the title race, according to Pat Nevin.
For the second week in a row Chelsea’s major title, rivals dropped points with Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham all failing to pick up maximum points as the Blues battled to a 2-0 victory against Hull.
However, Arsenal managed to secure all three points with a dramatic 98th-minute penalty from Alexis Sanchez after Ben Mee fouled Laurent Koscielny.
The Gunners are currently in second place in the Premier League table, eight points behind leaders Chelsea and according to Pat Nevin, they are fortunate that the gap is not larger.
Speaking in his column for the club’s official website Nevin stated:
There is an old saying, ‘Make hay while the sun shines.’
Well there hasn’t been a lot of sunshine in west London recently but metaphorically, Chelsea have certainly been harvesting the points while others have been caught napping. For the second week in a row, others near us have frittered points away and Chelsea haven’t.
Laurent Koscielny was actually offside when Ben Mee fouled him for the last gasp penalty. On this subject Nevin wrote:
It is slightly infuriating that from our point of view Arsenal managed to somehow get an extra two points with a last-second penalty that shouldn’t have been a penalty and was offside anyway. Still it was another fine weekend in an ever-increasingly heartening season.
Arsenal beat Chelsea 3-0 at the Emirates in September, in a game that proved to be the turning point in Chelsea’s season, prompting Antonio Conte to introduce his 3-4-3 formation to the Premier League.
Chelsea face the Gunners at Stamford Bridge on 4th February after a tough trip to Anfield earlier in the week. Should the Blues keep up their impressive form and win those two games then they will have one hand firmly on the Premier League trophy.
