Diego Costa saw his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet, as the points were shared between Liverpool and Chelsea. David Luiz scored his first goal since returning to Chelsea, catching out Mignolet with a fantastic free-kick, before a Georginio Wijnaldum header pegged the Blues back in the second-half.
Liverpool dominated for long periods of the game but were unable to create many clear-cut opportunities on a rain-soaked surface at Anfield.
Wijnaldum being the only player to test Courtois in the first half. Chelsea began to grow into the game, with N’Golo Kante’s incredible battling in the midfield allowing Eden Hazard and Willian to push forward.
Midway through the first half Luiz then opened the scoring, as the Brazilian took everyone by surprise as he curled the ball in after Mignolet nonchalantly walked away from his near post having seemingly not heard Mark Clattenburg blow his whistle.
In the second half, Jurgen Klopp expertly deployed his ‘heavy metal football’, as Liverpool pressed and harried Chelsea’s backline from the kick-off. Klopp also exploited the space in between Cesar Azpilicueta and Victor Moses, and this tactic came into fruition when Henderson’s floated ball was nodded on to the head of Wijnaldum, who obliged with his third goal of the season.
Costa, who disappointed on the night, then failed to send Chelsea 11 points clear as his late penalty was saved by Mignolet.
