Chelsea are set to face serious competition in their chase for Southampton man Virgil van Dijk, with Liverpool sniffing around the defender as well.
According to a report this morning from the London Evening Standard, the Reds are seriously considering making a summer move for the Dutchman and will be looking to rival the Blues in their pursuit of the centre-back.
Van Dijk has been sidelined since late January after a challenge from Jamie Vardy in Saints’ 3-0 win at St Mary’s left him with a serious foot injury, but the powerful ex-Celtic man is continuing his recovery and will be hoping to make a return before the end of the ongoing 2016/17 campaign.

The report claims that Saints will seek out a fee worth in the region of £50 million, which would be the joint-highest ever transfer fee for a defender in history, but one that would be affordable for Chelsea.
Van Dijk would almost certainly bolster the Blues’ back line and would provide a lot of quality.
