Chelsea are edging closer to the re-signing of highly sought after Everton striker, Romelu Lukaku, reports Italian outlet, Calcio Mercato.
However, despite reported interest from Bayern Munich, PSG, and Manchester United, it seems that his former club Chelsea are in pole position to acquire his signature.
Speaking to Sky Italia on Wednesday, Sky Sports journalist Massimo Marianella said: “I can say Lukaku’s Chelsea move is almost a done deal.”
The Belgian striker left the Blues permanently in 2014 for the Toffees and ever since, Lukaku has been increasingly impressive both in terms of goals and overall performance.
This season, he is currently the top scorer in the Premier League with 21 goals and also six assists to his name. Inevitably, due to this outstanding form, many of the top clubs in Europe appear to be interested in the signing of the 23-year-old.
Lukaku has also recently rejected a new lucrative contract at Everton, and his desire to leave the club in the summer is evident.
Likened to Didier Drogba, Lukaku is renowned for his immense physicality, and also tremendous speed and power that he possesses.
With Diego Costa yet to commit his future to the club, it is essential that Chelsea prepare for his possible departure, which seems inevitable in the near future, and with Michy Batshuayi out of favour with Antonio Conte, top class forward options are at a bare minimum for the Blues.
Lukaku himself has expressed his desire of emulating Drogba’s playing style and with an opportunity for redemption at Chelsea, there is a high chance the Belgian will choose to prove himself as a player who Chelsea can rely on to gain success in the years to come.
