Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has insisted that he has been delighted with David Luiz’s progress at the club since the start of the season and has heaped the praise on his centre-back.
Luiz has been a vital cog in Chelsea’s season so far and has been massively impressive throughout the course of the campaign, helping them to storm ahead in the title race.
The Blues sit four points clear of Tottenham Hotspur at the summit and have their defence to thank for building such a solid foundation this season, with Luiz featuring prominently at the heart of it.
The Brazil international’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed either, with Conte lauding his displays and his development, as cited by the Independent.
David arrived in England and I heard a lot of bad things about him when he arrived, and why was he coming back in Chelsea because, in the past, he had performed bad and he was ‘not a defender’.
This was a great challenge for him, but also for me. Because I think when you have great ability for your players, and you can work to try and improve some situations, it’s great. You can see that David, for sure, is a really strong defender.
Luiz is a strong contender to be in the PFA team of the year for the 2016/17 campaign but was unable to prevent his side falling short at the hands of Manchester United yesterday in a 2-0 defeat.
I like, always, to repeat to him that it’s very important to have the right concentration. His role is a crucial role for us, and I think he has performed very well. But I want him to perform very well for the rest of the season.
