Chelsea have reportedly lodged an enquiry for Bayern Munich centre back Jerome Boateng as they seek a backup plan to Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, the Blues are keen to sign a new central defender this summer and have identified the Germany international as a more than good enough player to solidify things at the back for Antonio Conte’s men.
However, despite the evident interest in Boateng, Chelsea still have their sights set on Saints defender Van Dijk and have made him their priority signing ahead of the summer transfer window.

It’s claimed in the report that the south coast side would demand a fee upwards of £50 million for their team captain, which has prompted Chelsea to explore other options.
Boateng has been sublime for Bayern since joining and having failed to convince in the Premier League with Manchester City before, could be keen to make his mark on English football once more.
