Chelsea insert buy-back clause in Traore transfer deal

Buy-back clauses seem to be the new ‘in’ thing when it comes to transfer deals.

Having seen Manchester United spend a world-record £89m fee to re-sign Paul Pogba from Juventus after allowing him to leave on a free transfer, no club wants to risk missing out on a potential world-class talent anymore.

Chelsea have been hurt by their own negligence as well. The Blues failed to make use of Romelu Lukaku and allowed him to join Everton in a £28m deal several years ago and are now weighing up a £80m move to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.

Acknowledging this, Chelsea have inserted a buy-back clause in the deal which saw Bertrand Traore leave the club on Monday to complete a £16m move to Lyon. The Blues have also added a clause which entitles them to 15% of any profit Lyon make on the striker.

Traore scored 13 goals on loan with Ajax last season but Antonio Conte couldn’t find a place for him in the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge so the club decided to cash in on the talented young striker this summer to fund other moves.

Nathan Ake is said to be close to re-joining Bournemouth in a £20m deal, and Chelsea are expected to insert similar clauses into the transfer in case they ever want to bring the Dutch defender back to the club.
