Chelsea tried to sign a number of players in the summer transfer window but for one reason or another, they were unable to get the deals they wanted done.
One of the players Antonio Conte wanted to bring to Stamford Bridge was talented Hamburg striker Jann-Fiete Arp.
The talented 17-year-old striker scored 28 goals in 25 games for Hamburg’s youth sides last season, before scoring seven times at the European Under-17 Championships earlier this summer.
Chelsea had scouted the striker for much of 2017 and are believed to have submitted a lucrative offer to sign the teenager during the transfer window, but a deal was not agreed.
The youngster signed a new deal with the German side with a view to breaking into their first-team setup in the near future, but Chelsea will certainly continue to keep tabs on the striker’s progress.
Arp himself has spoken out about his future, claiming it doesn’t make sense to join Chelsea at such a young age:
It just doesn’t make any sense to join Chelsea as a 17-year-old.
You have achieved near to nothing, basically have no experience in professional football. The risk is too high. It would have been nonsense to move abroad and neglect everything else.
Football is a day-to-day business and it can be over any day. But nobody can take away the Abitur [German A-levels] from you. On top of that, money must not play a role at my age.
