Chelsea were desperate to sign a fullback late in the transfer window and after Liverpool beat them to Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the Blues were back to square one.

GFFN, who cite L’Equipe, state that Chelsea were on the verge of signing free-agent defender Bacary Sagna who has been without a club since his release from Manchester City at the start of the summer.

Having already rejected Brighton, Sagna was all set for a move to Stamford Bridge before Antonio Conte had a change of heart and finalised a Deadline Day move for Torino standout Davide Zappacosta.
Bursaspor, Marseille, Sporting Lisbon and Besitkas all also made contact with Sagna over a move and the France international remains on the market.
Sagna has spent the last decade in English football split between spells with Arsenal and Manchester City could still offer a lot to a side. The report claims that he is set for a return to the Premier League with either West Ham or Leicester.
