Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has backed the club’s fringe players to shine in the plethora of cup competitions that the Blues are involved in.
Azpilicueta netted in Chelsea’s Champions League opener against Qarabag on Tuesday night, playing a key part in their 6-0 win over the Azerbaijani outfit.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte fielded a much-changed line-up to the setup that swept Leicester aside on Saturday, but the Blues’ depth in quality paid off with a stellar performance.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Azpilicueta highlighted how important it is to have such depth, and believes that Chelsea’s so-called backup players can have a great impact this season.

We need everyone in the squad, we know it’s a long season – we have games every three days. That’s what we need, everyone pushing together to get the job done and making it difficult for the manager [to select his team]. For a striker to get a goal was important for him.
The feeling [in the dressing room] is that we have to work hard and go game by game. We are the current [Premier League] champions but we are still in September and have the whole season ahead.
Chelsea were in rampant mood against Qarabag, and made the perfect start to the Champions League group stages. Roma and Atletico Madrid drew with each other in a goalless affair, meaning that the Blues sit at the top of their group ahead of the next game week.
