BT Sport pundit and ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has backed Chelsea for Champions League success.

Ferdinand says that he expects Chelsea to do the best in Europe out of the five English teams involved in the competition.

Liverpool were the only English side who did not win their opening group game, as Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham all secured wins.

Chelsea boasted the biggest victory, beating Qarabag 6-0 at Stamford Bridge, equalling their best ever Champions League result.

Pedro, Davide Zappacosta, Michy Basthuayi, Cesar Azpilicueta and Tiemoue Bakayako all scored for the Blues, with an own goal rounding off the scoring.

Speaking on BT Sport, as quoted by The Evening Standard, Ferdinand said this:

I think they are a very well balanced team. I think the manager (Antonio Conte) works hard, he drills them daily on tactics.

They have an understanding of each other as individuals but also as a team.

In that sense I think Chelsea are our best hope as an English team.

A lot of the other teams you can see deficiencies in the squad.

Chelsea are the last English team to have won the Champions League. They beat Bayern Munich on penalties in 2012, and went on to win the Europa League the season after.
