Sutton blasts Drinkwater for snubbing England call

Chris Sutton believes Danny Drinkwater has made a huge mistake by snubbing an England call-up.

The former Celtic attacker discussed Drinkwater’s decision to reject a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the two friendlies in the break in his column for the Daily Mail.

Danny Drinkwater has made the biggest mistake of his career in snubbing Gareth Southgate. Telling Glenn Hoddle that I would not play in an England B fixture in 1998 was the worst decision I ever made. At the age of 24, my international career was over.

Drinkwater is hardly a regular for England, and his decision to snub the chance to play for his country against Germany and Brazil in friendly matches seems bizarre.

The former Leicester City man has just three England caps to his name, and is seemingly not in a hurry to earn his fourth of his career.

Drinkwater’s reasoning for the snub is stated to be due to fitness concerns. He has endured a testing start to his career at Stamford Bridge, with injuries halting him from hitting the ground running.

Now, Drinkwater’s chances of playing at the World Cup are surely over and future England managers – never mind Southgate – will not want to touch him.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte will hope that Drinkwater is not experiencing recurring issues with regards to his fitness.
