Cahill feels he can contribute at the World Cup

Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill believes he could play a role for England at the World Cup this summer if given the chance by manager Gareth Southgate.

Football.London, citing Goal, write that the 32-year-old feels he has a lot to offer the national team. Cahill said:

I’ve been there before. I’ve been fortunate to have played the majority of the time I’ve been at this club.

I’ve enjoyed success and I feel like I’ve been a big part of success – not just involved in winning trophies but involved heavily. So I feel I can contribute when I’m out there. But it’s the manager’s decision.

The defender has been out of the team at times under Antonio Conte this season, making 24 Premier League appearances and helping keep seven clean sheets this season.

However, Cahill has started the last four games for the Blues and appears to be coming in to form at just the right time.

Southgate left Cahill out of his squad for friendlies against Holland and Italy earlier this year, instead opting for the uncapped duo of James Tarkowski and Alfie Mawson.

Cahill has 58 England caps since his debut in 2010 and has previously represented his country at the 2014 World Cup, as well as the European Championships in 2016 and 2012.
