Reece James joins Wigan on loan

Chelsea defender Reece James has joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.

The Championship side have confirmed the defender’s arrival from the Blues on a temporary basis.

Prior to leaving Chelsea, James also put pen-to-paper on a new four-year deal at the club.

James gets the first taste of senior football after being named as the Blues’ Academy Player of the Year last season.

The defender, who captained the club last season, featured in the Premier League 2, FA Youth Cup and the UEFA Youth League, but is now preparing to take the next step of his career.

Despite only turning 18 back in December, James has already featured for England at U-20 level and will be setting his sights on the U-21 set-up with a solid campaign at Wigan.

Wigan boss Paul Cook has spoken of his excitement after bringing the youngster in on loan.

Reece is a really exciting young player and we are delighted to get him here to Wigan Athletic for his first loan away from Chelsea.
