Chelsea could make a big-money move to pip Manchester City to the signing of Napoli star Jorginho, according to reports from Italy.
The Blues are in the process of pushing to appoint Maurizio Sarri as the club’s new manager but are still locked in talks with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, despite the Italian having been sacked last month.
Although Sarri’s €8m release clause at the Stadio San Paolo has reached its expiration, he is still technically under contract at Napoli, thereby leading Chelsea to continue talks with the Serie A club over releasing him from his deal.
This is where a potential deal for Jorginho comes in, with Sport Italia (h/t Football Italia) indicating that a €60m deal for the midfielder would act as a sweetener in Chelsea’s pursuit to convince Napoli to release Sarri.
City have been desperate to close a deal for Jorginho but at the eleventh hour, it seems Chelsea could swoop, with Sport Italia believing that this would enable smoother negotiations with Napoli regarding the deal for Sarri.
