The La Liga side offered the player to Chelsea as a sweetener in the deal to take Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid.
The Belgian shot-stopper was widely expected to move to La Liga this summer, but the Blues were digging their heels in until a replacement was signed.
Kovacic has made his feelings clear at Madrid. He wanted to move on this summer after falling out of favour.

Signed from Inter with a wealth of promise back in 2015, Kovacic has struggled to hold down a regular starting place at Madrid.
The likes of Luka Modric and Casemiro have all been picked ahead of the Croatian in recent years.
