Reina never considered Chelsea switch
Pepe Reina has insisted that he never truly considered swapping AC Milan for Chelsea in the summer transfer window, Calciomercato.it reports.
The Spaniard put pen to paper on a deal to join Milan only in recent months, as he opted to seek pastures new away from Napoli, where he worked well with Maurizio Sarri.
Nevertheless, reports emerged linking Reina with a reunion with Sarri at Stamford Bridge, as the club scrambled to secure a replacement for Thibaut Courtois, who eventually sealed a move to Real Madrid.
A move for Reina didn’t come to fruition, however, and Chelsea moved on to other targets. The club ended up splashing a world-record sum on Kepa Arrizabalaga in a deal believed to be worth £71 million.
Reina has recently been discussing whether he had considered the prospect of a move to Chelsea and although he was full of praise and admiration for his former boss Sarri, he insisted that the thought had never crossed his mind.
No (he didn’t call me), I called to wish him good luck and ask how he was in London. There was never a chance to go to Chelsea and I never even thought about it because I had already made a decision (to stay at Milan).
