Sarri backs Alonso to improve his defensive qualities

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has called on Marcos Alonso to improve his defensive qualities as the season progresses, as reported by Sky Sports.

The Blues boss addressed the media ahead of his side’s home fixture against Bournemouth this weekend, with the team now keen to make it four wins on the bounce in the Premier League.

Alonso has been utilised in a different role under Sarri compared to his time under the management of Antonio Conte. The former Chelsea boss deployed the Spaniard as a left wing-back in a formation consisting of five defenders.

Sarri, though, has implemented his favoured 4-3-3 setup at Chelsea following his arrival, meaning that Alonso has dropped into a deeper role as a left-back, as opposed to the more forward-thinking role of left wing-back.

The 27-year-old has been in fine form so far for Chelsea but Sarri feels there is still room for improvement. Highlighting Alonso’s qualities, the Italian boss hailed his left-back and tipped him for big things this season.

Alonso played very well in three matches. I think he’s a very good player and he can improve in the defensive phase.

He has physical qualities at the top level so I think he can do more in the defensive phase but I am not worried, he is a very good player but I think he can do more.

matchday.
