Chelsea youngster Jake Clarke-Salter has revealed that he turned down interest from Rangers to sign for Vitesse on loan.
Speaking in a revealing interview with The Guardian, Clarke-Salter has explained why opted to follow in the footsteps of several Chelsea youngsters before him and join the Dutch side temporarily.
A lot of young English players at the moment have gone abroad. I think it’s the regular game-time that is important to us. That’s the main thing – playing games can open up so many opportunities. Mason [Mount] is an example of that. He didn’t play much for the first couple of months at Vitesse, then all of a sudden he ripped the league apart.
A number of Chelsea youth prospects have joined Vitesse on loan due to the partnership between the two clubs, but have all endured varying degrees of success.
Steven Gerrard’s Rangers were heavily linked with a number of English-based players during the summer, with defence one of the key areas he wanted to improve.
Clarke-Salter is very highly rated at Chelsea but has seen injuries delay his development in recent years.
Spells at Bristol Rovers and Sunderland were hindered by both injuries and suspensions, but the defender is keen to get back on track while out in the Eredivisie.
