Christensen hopeful of Chelsea stay

Andreas Christensen has fallen out of favour at Chelsea in recent months, but isn’t giving up on his Blues career.

The Dane became a favourite of Antonio Conte last season, establishing himself in the starting lineup for the bulk of the campaign. Making 40 appearances, Christensen was tipped to follow up his breakout season under new boss Maurizio Sarri.

However, Sarri has not looked upon the central defender in the same way Conte did.

Limited to the Carabao Cup and Europa League, Sarri has preferred a centre-half duo of David Luiz and Antonio Rüdiger to one that included the 22-year-old.

Indeed, in Chelsea’s recent League Cup victory against Derby County, Blues assistant manager Gianfranco Zola admitted that Christensen ‘could have done better’.

Speculation had been rife that the defender would get a chance away from Stamford Bridge on loan in January, but it seems the Lillerod-native will do everything he can to stay in West London.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Christensen was asked if he would leave in January. The World Cup star said:

Difficult question. No, I don’t think so. Things are different from last season. I played a lot of games [last season] but this season it hasn’t been like that.

It’s always difficult for a player but we’ll see what happens. If you asked every player that’s not playing if they’re happy, they’re going to say no. Everyone wants to play.

I can’t do anything else but go back there, train and do my best. Every time I get that opportunity, I have to do well and show him that he can count on me.

Christensen did concede that sitting on the sidelines was less than prefereable, however.

You don’t want to sit around and wait for it. You want to play straight away and that’s why we all play football. Not playing is not fun. It’s a different situation to last season.

matchday.
