The teenager was rather cynically driven into he advertising hoardings in the dying moments of Friday’s 2-1 loss against Denmark, with Kasper Dolberg the man whose hip-check sent Ampadu into the barrier.
Usually, fans of club sides don’t want to see their players on international duty but with Ampadu hardly getting a sniff of first-team action at Chelsea, getting regular minutes for Wales was a huge positive for all parties.
However, the squad will face Albania without the 18-year-old, and he’ll return to the Blues to begin treatment on any injuries that he picked up.
Wales boss Ryan Giggs was not pleased with what happened to Ampadu, calling it a cheap shot.
He said:
You’ve got a lad who has just turned 18, broke his leg when he was 17. It was a late tackle. I realise we’re not playing tiddlywinks and tackling is part of the game – and I like that – but for a young lad who’s been injured badly, it was a cheap shot. That’s why I reacted. And I was proud of the players, how they reacted protecting a young player, which is how it should be.
