Alonso could be dropped against City
Maurizio Sarri has hinted that Marcos Alonso could be dropped to the bench against Manchester City this weekend.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, as reported by West London Sport, the Italian head coach explained that he’ll need to consider his options ahead of the game against Pep Guardiola’s side.
In the last period he didn’t play a lot. He wasn’t in the national team in the last international break. He played in all the 14 matches in the Premier League but he didn’t play in the Europa League and he didn’t play in the (Carabao) Cup. He played not very well against Fulham.
He played better in the first half in the last match and then he had problems in the second half. I need to understand, because for me he is not tired. I want to see the last training (session) and then I will decide.
Alonso has struggled recently and put in another below-par performance against Wolves midweek.
Chelsea fans have called for Italian defender Emerson to come into the side, with Alonso struggling with fatigue, despite Sarri playing down claims he is tired.
Emerson has been unable to break into Sarri’s pans domestically and has been limited to first-team football in the cup competitions since joining the club last January.
He has found regular football hard to come by following his move from Roma but has impressed when given the chance in the Europa League this season.
