Alonso escapes FA punishment after Maitland-Niles clash
Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has escaped punishment from the Football Association after his clash with Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles, according to a report on the Daily Mail.
Replays showed that Alonso caught Maitland-Niles in the face but referee Anthony Taylor and his team of officials failed to spot the incident.
Arsenal players appealed furiously as Maitland-Niles clutched his face on the floor but no action was taken against Alonso.
After reviewing the incident, the FA have also decided not to punish the Spanish left-back, who has been badly out of form in recent weeks.
The Gunners went on to hold on for a crucial 2-0 victory as the race for the top four intensifies.
The Blues now face a midweek Carabao Cup semi-final second leg clash against London rivals Spurs and Maurizio Sarri’s side needs to overturn a 1-0 deficit.
Many Chelsea fans have been calling for Emerson Palmieri to start ahead of Alonso and Sarri may be tempted to make the change.
