Sarri-ball? More like sorry-ball

Gone are the days when I would look forward to watching Chelsea play. From the days of Charlie Cooke to Pat Nevin and even to Eden Hazard of last season.

Where is the flair? Where is the attacking play that thrilled the watching crowds? Now we watch stagnant, pass first football, encouraging every team to press us, causing us to flounder and make defensive errors.

We take so long to attack, that even the worst teams – see recent games with Southampton and Newcastle, have the time to get defensively set and then to get the ball through is like threading it through the eye of a needle.

We don’t have any height up top, so an early cross is not an option, or even allowed by the Sarri-ball style of play. It is frustrating and clear to every team we play how they need to defend against us.

Press Jorginho – watch him fall over, lose the ball and give away possession.

Sarri is so wrong when he says no-one else can play that role. Kante is among the best in the world in the position. Our best passers of the ball is David Luiz – let him step into the defensive midfield position. Allow him to ping the ball around like a conductor – stick Christiansen at the back and perhaps we will be ok.

The other decision is more radical – cut our losses and move on. Thanks Maurizio, but you maybe you should consider a return to the world of banking.

matchday.
