Speaking at a press conference ahead of the game at Stamford Bridge this weekend, Chelsea’s Assistant Manager Gianfranco Zola confirmed that the England international had returned to training earlier than expected and as such, he could be fit to play in this weekend’s game.
The Blues have had a busy run of fixtures in recent weeks and after a gruelling League Cup semi-final on Thursday evening, Maurizio Sarri is expected to make changes for the FA Cup game on Sunday.
The 23-year-old has been out for around three weeks with a back injury and was expected to miss the entire month of January but it appears that he’s close to full fitness.
Chelsea will assess how the midfielder reacts to training on Saturday before making a decision about his potential involvement in Sunday’s game.
