Chelsea join race to sign Maxi Gomez

Chelsea have joined the race to sign Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez at the end of the season.

According to Calcio Mercato, Chelsea are among the interested clubs looking at Gomez after his impressive form for Celta in La Liga this season.

The young forward has nine goals and five assists in the league, attracting interest from Chelsea, Barcelona and Liverpool.

The report claims that Barcelona are looking to bring him in as a back-up to former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, but they face competition from Liverpool and Chelsea for his signature.

Gomez has been capped nine times by Uruguay at senior level, but is yet to score his first goal for his country. He has, however, scored 26 goals in 59 La Liga appearances since joining Celta in the summer of 2017.

Chelsea were recently handed a two-window transfer ban by FIFA for breaching rules regarding youth transfers, but have appealed the decision and could yet be able to sign players in the summer.
