James is on loan from Chelsea at Wigan and has established himself as a crucial player for the side.
The 19-year-old, who has operated on the right-hand side of the defence, has made 37 appearances in the Championship for the Latics and has come of age in senior football.
Wigan have struggled to impress this season and find themselves in a precariously low position. They sit in 19th place, but would almost certainly be worse off but for the composed displays of James at the back.
Chelsea could hand their young defender the chance to impress in the summer when he returns from pre-season from his season-long loan spell at the DW Stadium.
Youngsters who can make an impact at Chelsea next season
Mount has looked good on loan at Derby County this season and could have the chance to shine at Chelsea next term.
Hudson-Odoi should be a regular starter for Chelsea as it is, and he absolutely must be handed sufficient opportunities next season.
Ampadu is a promising young player who could break into the starting line-up on a more regular basis in the 2019/20 campaign.
Abraham has been excellent for Aston Villa on loan. The 21-year-old could be another option for Chelsea up front when he returns.
