Sarri wants to trigger Giroud extension

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has revealed that he wants Olivier Giroud to stay at the club.

Giroud’s current contract at Chelsea expires at the end of the season, although the club have an option to extend it for a further 12 months.

Sarri says that he is keen to keep him and expects Giroud to be at the club next season, meaning that his extension will have been triggered.

As quoted by The Daily Star, Sarri said this:

Yes, of course, I want him to stay.

And I know the club have an option with him for another season, so I think he will remain.

The French international has only scored twice in the Premier League this season, but has a very impressive record in the Europa League. He has struck nine times in nine games in Europe’s second biggest club competition.

Giroud joined Chelsea in January 2018 from Arsenal and has scored 16 goals in 56 appearances for the club to date, after netting 105 goals in 265 games for the Gunners during a six-and-a-half year spell in North London.
